SmartyDNS is known for a couple of outstanding features, with first and foremost being their reasonable pricing. For their low price, they offer rather fast local servers, which they have in a number of countries, including Canada, the UK, the US, Germany, and Poland. SmartyDNS offers a DNS service and a VPN in one plan.

In A Hurry? Here Are My Key Finds

  • Unblocks Netflix and several other streaming services
  • Offers basic VPN security features
  • Uses shared-IP instead of designated IP addresses

Download SmartyDNS Now!

One benefit is that this is actually a VPN server and not a Proxy, so all your data is highly encrypted. They offer various policies for data encryption, such as OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP, SoftEther, IKEv2, and PPTP. You can check for yourself which policy suits your needs the most. On top of this, they keep a zero logs policy, so your data is not logged by them, and you will remain completely anonymous. Depending on personal opinion, one downside may be that you do not have a designated IP. SmartyDNS uses shared-IP which means IPs are shared between other users.

Not all of SmartyDNS's servers are torrent-friendly, in fact you get access to only 5 servers across Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Romania, and Switzerland. Unfortunately you can only download torrents as uploading on these servers is not allowed, and if you get caught uploading in Germany or the Netherlands your account is suspended without a refund.

While it can unblock Netflix and a number of other streaming services, you won't get the advanced security or added features of premium providers. Plus, due to a low number of servers you may end up dealing with buffering, disconnects, and freezing. If you want fast speeds, more servers, and advanced security features that let you stream Netflix globally, check out these top providers.

Downloading the app is simple. You can download it on their website for Android, IOS, MAC, Windows, and Fire TV. If you are experienced with VPNs, there are plenty of advanced customization's for you to play around with.

As I mentioned before, the prices are fairly low. They also offer a free trial for three days, which isn’t very long, but you do have access to the full system. They also have a 30-day money-back guarantee, so if the three-day trial isn’t long enough, you can use it for the rest of the month without actually paying for it.

On the website, they offer support in the form of a FAQ, help tutorials, and you can sign a ticket. They also offer live chat support during office hours. Unfortunately, they do not have a service line that you can call. Yet, they are known to answer these tickets rather quickly, and they’re eager to help.

The Bottom Line

SmartyDNS offers a basic VPN with basic security.

Overall this is a simple and well-working VPN provider, but don’t expect too much from it. The kill switch is only available on the Windows app, and server numbers are thin.

Generally, it works well, but it doesn't stand out among other VPNs. If you want a powerful VPN with excellent support for a reasonable price, check out ExpressVPN.

  • Simple to start-up and use

  • Zero logs policy
  • Offers various data encryption options

Not what it used to be

Smarty DNS used to be a very reliable choice but now the servers don’t work properly and customer support is basically absent or extremely slow in replying. Often they don’t offer a solution which is a pity.

Gone out of business - do not sign up

It has not been possible to connect or use the smart DNS service for several days. Support is never online and support tickets are not answered. Looks like they are still taking new signups, this is surely illegal.

Unreliable service and shady business practice.

Speed is absolutely slowed down to a crawl on VPN, geo-tricking doesn't work reliably on Netflix or Hulu, and their business practice on so called "lifetime" subscription for writing a review (they told the internet community when they launched that you could get a lifetime subscription if writing a positive review) is very, very shady. They give free subscriptions for writing a positive review on their service which would not be necessary if their service help up to standard.
