Radmin VPN Review 2024: Are Free Virtual LANs Safe?

Our Score: 5.3/10
Ranked 112th out of 198 VPNs

Radmin is a popular, free service that allows you to create virtual LANs (local area networks). This can be useful for safely sharing files while working remotely or playing offline games with friends. However, is Radmin VPN safe?

The answer is not really, so I recommend using a traditional VPN along with Radmin VPN. This is because Radmin VPN doesn’t encrypt your entire device or offer necessary security features like a kill switch. It also doesn’t let you hide or change your IP address since it has no server network. To stay safe on your virtual LAN, choose one of the best VPNs from this list.

Important. This VPN is used to set up virtual local area networks. Unlike most traditional VPNs we review, it doesn’t encrypt your connection or even provide a server network. Therefore, consider that its overall score may be impacted since we grade every VPN using the same categories. To make an informed decision, read on to see how the VPN performed in the areas that matter most to you.

Streaming — Not Designed for Safe Streaming

5.0

Radmin VPN shouldn’t have an effect on your streaming, for good or bad. This is because it’s not a traditional VPN. It only allows you to create virtual LANs for remote work or gaming. This means it’s not capable of safely accessing popular platforms from anywhere. But, it also shouldn’t affect your speeds.

The best VPNs for streaming have optimized servers and fast speeds for high quality video playback. Since I don’t recommend going online without encryption, I suggest you try one of the best VPNs for streaming even if you use them in conjunction with Radmin VPN.

Editor’s note. The VPNs we recommend generally follow strict no-logging policies that prevent them from viewing your online activities. This leaves you solely responsible for how they’re used. My team and I ask that you please uphold all copyright laws.

Speed — Does Not Impact Speed Like a Traditional VPN

5.0

Radmin should only alter your speeds within its virtual networks. That means there may be delays when you try to transfer files with the other devices you’re connected to. There could also be additional lag in your games, which I’ll discuss in more detail in the next section.

So, it won’t lower your speeds while you browse, stream, or torrent outside of its networks. That’s quite different from most VPNs where you connect to encrypted servers. The encryption process and the distance your data has to travel will always slow down your connection to some extent.

However, the best VPNs can actually keep you safe while hardly lowering your rates. You can find one of the fastest VPNs available in this list. Our speed experts have been testing many of these services for years, and we’ve compiled the most consistent performers.

Gaming — Lets You Create Virtual LANs

7.0

This is one of Radmin’s main selling points since it lets you connect with other devices using different networks. In the past, local area networks were exactly that. You would have to physically connect computers to each other in the same room to play games that weren’t optimized for online play. However, services like Radmin have solved this problem.

There is a 100Mbps speed cap on its networks, but the most important measurement for gaming is your ping. This lets you know how long it takes your data to travel. You want it to be below 85ms, so you can enjoy smooth play without additional lag. When lag gets too high, your character takes a while to respond to your inputs, so the game stops being fun.

Radmin is considered one of the best virtual LAN solutions (it’s even more popular than Hamachi). The fact that it’s free doesn’t hurt, and many people find it easy to use without worrying about annoying bugs. For the most part, it’s useful for games that no longer support online play (like Stardew Valley and Skyrim Together) or when a game's online functionality isn’t working.

With that said, Radmin can’t fully protect you while you’re playing online games. You never know who you’re connecting on gaming networks, so I always use encryption to help prevent DDoS attacks. You can test out one of the best free VPNs for gaming in this list.

Server Network — There Are No Servers

5.0

Radmin VPN will not connect you to any servers, so I really wish they picked a different name (rather than calling their service a VPN). When most people think of VPNs, they think of an app that allows you to connect to a wide variety of servers.

The best VPNs have vast server networks that include several privacy assurances. More servers not only lets you choose from more worldwide locations, but it also makes overcrowding less likely (which can slow down your speeds). The most privacy-friendly VPNs own their servers and use virtual locations when it’s necessary to keep their infrastructure out of restrictive countries.

Many VPNs also offer a variety of servers, including dedicated IPs (often for an added fee). A static (or dedicated) IP is important if you want a consistent address for something like starting a business. Some VPNs even offer specialized servers for things like streaming, gaming, torrenting, and additional security.

I suggest you check out our list of VPNs with huge networks servers. Even if you decide to utilize Radmin’s unique abilities, I highly recommend using a VPN as well to make sure the vital information on your device is protected.

Security — Only Protects Activities That Take Place in Your Virtual LAN

5.0

Radmin protects your virtual LAN with AES 256-bit encryption, but it doesn’t encrypt anything outside the network. As stated before, besides activities that take place between devices (like chats, file sharing, or gaming), the rest of your internet traffic will be exposed.

On the plus side, AES-256 encryption is nearly unbreakable, and it’s used by militaries and banks around the world. Unfortunately, Radmin is missing many popular security features that come with true VPNs like multiple protocols, split tunneling, and a kill switch.

Screenshot of Radmin VPN's UI highlighting the different functions you can engage in between devices You may need to adjust firewall or antivirus settings to connect

What it does let you do is share files and chat securely between the devices connected to your virtual network. It even allows you to view another device’s screen. This is similar to what Radmin’s paid service does. It’s a tool for remotely controlling other devices that’s popular with IT services.

With that said, this all still leaves your device vulnerable. If you’re looking for a VPN that can keep all your activities safe, look into this list of some of the most secure VPNs.

Privacy — Good Policy, but It’s Missing Some Important Information

6.0

Radmin’s no-logging policy is solid, but I do wish it was more clear. While it says many of the right things, I prefer when VPNs are a bit more specific about what they store. There is also no indication that it’s gone through an independent audit to verify its claims.

Does Radmin VPN Keep Logs? No

The service promises not to “log, collect, or store any of your traffic or your personal data.” It specifically mentions that it doesn’t store the passwords from other programs or games. However, I wish it explicitly stated that it doesn’t record IP addresses since it doesn’t provide a definition for what “personal data” means to them.

The VPN also states it stores the minimum data necessary to keep its services functioning. Once again, I wish it told us exactly what it collects. Just about every VPN stores anonymized information like timestamps, device type, server connected to, and more.

The website’s policy lets you know it will store your IP address for “site trends and statistics.” So, I recommend using a VPN while you visit the site to download the app. On a positive note, I love that you don’t have to provide any information to access the app, not even an email address.

Was Radmin VPN Audited? No

Many top VPNs have their privacy policies audited to prove their claims, but Radmin VPN hasn’t done this. Without a reputable third-party verifying their policy, you just have to take Radmin’s word for it. Another issue is that Radmin’s policies are so vague, it would make them tough to audit in the first place.

Based in British Virgin Islands

Radmin is based in the privacy-friendly British Virgin Islands, outside of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances. This Alliance is an agreement between governments to share their citizen’s data, so it’s always reassuring when a VPN keeps its headquarters outside of it.

Does Radmin Work in China? Maybe

Radmin VPN’s ticketing system wasn’t functional, so I couldn’t verify with support if it works in China. However, I believe it’s likely that it does since this isn’t the type of VPN that the country normally bans. If you choose to use Radmin VPN in China, I’d recommend downloading and installing it before entering the region.

The Chinese government has banned many VPNs, but there have been no publicly-reported cases of it going after the individuals who use them. My team and I don’t condone any illegal activities, and we advise you to read up on the laws before using a VPN in any country.

There are a few traditional VPNs that still work in the region. You can find one of the best VPNs for China in this list.

Torrenting — Doesn’t Support P2P Networks

5.0

Although you can share files with Radmin VPN, it can’t be used to protect you while you’re torrenting. Since you can’t access P2P services through its network, it will have no effect on your torrents.

The best VPNs can keep you safe on P2P networks while hardly lowering your speeds. You’ll want to look for features like torrenting-optimized servers and port forwarding since they can increase downloading and seeding speeds.

It’s also preferable if the VPN supports torrenting on all its servers, so you can get faster speeds with a nearby location. You can find one of the best VPNs for torrenting in this list. To be clear, my team and I don’t condone copyright infringement in any form. We urge you to only download files within the public domain.

Installation & Apps

6.0

Installation & Apps — Easy to Install, but It Only Supports One Operating System

The app it offers is quite simple with a relatively attractive design. Since the app is so minimal, it’s difficult to criticize it. You probably won’t have any issues navigating through it since there’s so little to it.

Screenshot of Radmin VPN's app UI highlighting the settings The advanced tab lets you connect a proxy or allow auto updates

The app’s main function is to allow you to create or join virtual LANs, and this is quite easy to do. To make a new one, you simply create a name and a password, and that’s really it. It also provides tons (over 100) of its own networks within the app set up for specific games like Minecraft or Heroes 5.

Setup & Installation

It couldn’t be easier to install Radmin VPN; all you have to do is follow the steps after you activate the .exe file. The process only took me about 3 minutes in total to complete.

Screenshot of Radmin VPN's download page on its website The link is actually provided on most of the website's pages

Since it’s only offered for one device type, it can’t be accessed through any app stores. The application is only available through its site.

Device Compatibility

Radmin VPN can only be used on a Windows desktop device, nothing else. While that is one of the more popular device types for gaming, it’s frustrating that it doesn’t support Linux or Mac desktops.

This means it can’t protect your connection on smart TVs, gaming consoles like Steam Decks, routers, or any mobile phones or tablets. To get comprehensive protection for all your tech, I recommend you choose a VPN that can encrypt all of your devices from this list.

Simultaneous Device Connections

You can use Radmin VPN on an unlimited number of devices. I appreciate this, but it’s actually a function of the service itself rather than a generous benefit. Since it’s a free service that doesn’t require any sign up, you can obviously set it up on as many Windows devices as you’d like.

Pricing

7.0
Free
$ 0 / month per month

Pricing — A Truly Free Service, but Not a Real VPN

Radmin VPN is a legitimately free application, and there’s no catch. As I’ve stated before, you don’t even have to sign up. Anyone is able to download its application and use its services at no cost.

It also offers Radmin (no VPN), which is a paid service for remotely controlling other devices. This is mainly marketed towards businesses, but it can also let you remotely access your home devices while you’re away. Primarily, it’s necessary for situations where an agent needs to control a customer’s device. Its price varies depending on the number of devices.

If you’d like a traditional VPN with similar functionality, I suggest trying NordVPN since its Meshnet feature lets you do the same thing. This remote access functionality is also available for Android, Mac, Linux, and iOS devices.

Reliability & Support

2.5

Reliability and Support — Could Not Be Reached

Radmin’s ticketing system didn’t work, and it doesn’t offer live chat support or an email address. This meant I had no way to ask any questions. This is particularly frustrating because most of the top VPNs have 24/7 live chats these days, which generally allow you to get answers to all your queries in minutes.

I tried to fill out support tickets on different days, but I was always left with an error message. This meant I had to rely on its FAQ page to try and sort out my issues. Thankfully, its troubleshooting section is fairly robust. I like that it provides detailed images in many of its step-by-step guides.

The Bottom Line

Final Verdict — Good for Creating Virtual LANs, but Can’t Keep You Safe

Radmin VPN is a nice Virtual LAN service that's available for free. If you’re running a remote work set up, or you want to play offline games with your friends, it’s a great option.

With that said, I wouldn’t use it without a traditional VPN that can actually encrypt your device. The best VPNs can hide your IP address and all your online activities while barely slowing you down, so you can still enjoy your LAN parties in Radmin. You can try out one of the top VPNs today from this list risk-free since they all come with reliable money-back guarantees.

FAQs on Radmin VPN

How does Radmin VPN compare to Hamachi?

Most people prefer Radmin VPN to LogMeIn Hamachi. They both let you create virtual LANs, but Radmin VPN is easy to use and install; plus, it tends to be less buggy. In addition, Radmin VPN is free for unlimited devices, while Hamachi is only free for up to 5.

Do you use Radmin VPN to play online or offline games?

Radmin VPN is usually used to play offline games. If a game no longer hosts online play, you can use it to create a virtual LAN to enjoy multiplayer with friends. In certain cases, it could be used to play games that are experiencing issues with their online functionality too.

Is Radmin VPN safe?

No, it can’t encrypt your device to keep you safe. Radmin VPN only lets you create and join virtual LANs, and it doesn’t offer important safety features like a kill switch or secure protocols. I recommend using it along with a traditional VPN with servers to protect the vital information on your device.

Will Radmin VPN slow me down?

It won’t affect your normal traffic, but there’s a 100Mbps speed cap within its virtual networks. If you don’t have the fastest base rates, it could make file sharing a slower process or even add lag to your games. However, this is understandable as there will always be some speed loss when you’re connecting distant devices remotely.

Is Radmin VPN free?

Yes, it’s a completely free service that requires no sign up and can be used on unlimited devices. However, this is only true of “Radmin VPN”. “Radmin” is a completely different application. It makes it possible to control other devices for IT purposes, and it can be quite expensive.

Is Radmin VPN really a VPN?

It’s probably not a VPN in the way you think as it doesn’t let you connect to any servers. Radmin VPN is a free service that lets you create and join virtual local area networks. This can be useful for remote workers or gamers, but it won’t protect your device or hide your IP address.
