FrootVPN makes a lot of bold claims as a VPN service, and it seems that many of them hold up under review.
Founded in Sweden in 2014, FrootVPN now boasts over 300,000 subscribers around the world.
As I was researching FrootVPN, I was impressed by the company’s 150 servers and 32 countries. The VPN offers connections in countries rarely used by other VPN services, and I never experienced any connection issues with their servers. And the impressive torrenting/P2P network is thanks to FrootVPN’s long-standing commitment to supporting P2P downloads. In fact, the company was famously promoted on the torrenting site The Pirate Bay because of the VPN’s extensive torrenting/P2P system.
FrootVPN utilizes L2TP, PPTP, IPSec IKEv1, and OpenVPN protocols, so you have all of the standard options when compared to other VPNs.
Connection speeds while using FrootVPN were reasonable and shouldn’t hamper users’ internet activities. HD streaming, gaming, and everyday surfing hold up well while using FrootVPN. While users will see slight reductions in connection speeds depending on the server they use, it’s not enough to create a problem. You can also connect up to 5 devices simultaneously per subscription, meaning most of your devices will enjoy safe internet browsing with FrootVPN.
With FrootVPN, unblocking Netflix was a breeze, which most users will find extremely helpful in their search for a reliable VPN.
Users shouldn’t have to worry about their data, as FrootVPN utilizes 2048-bit encryption, though there are legitimate questions about the actual encryption protocol used. Also, it’s worth noting that FrootVPN hasn’t released any audit data for years. It’s something to think about when considering this VPN.
While there’s no free trial, FrootVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so there’s plenty of time to try it out and still get your money back if you aren’t satisfied. You can also pay via Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, and Perfect Money. And cryptocurrency holders will be happy to know that FrootVPN accepts crypto as a form of payment!
During my testing, the only real letdown was the poor response from customer service when I attempted to ask FrootVPN questions about their service. Emails went unanswered, and customer service agents were always busy when I tried to use the live chat feature. Another potential issue that some users may find frustrating is that FrootVPN only offers their VPN as an installable Windows program.

Streaming — Unblocks Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and Spotify, but Doesn’t Seem to Work With Many Other Streaming Services
During my test, FrootVPN got around the geo-restrictions for Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, and Spotify for almost all servers. But streaming services such as Hulu and BBC iPlayer didn’t work well at all, sometimes producing completely blank pages while connected to the VPN. FrootVPN even comes with specialized Netflix and BBC iPlayer connections, though I was unable to get iPlayer to work with the VPN. I attempted to contact FrootVPN’s customer service department to see how their VPN software worked with streaming services such as BBC iPlayer, Kodi, and ESPN, but never received a response after three days of waiting.
Unblocked: Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and Spotify Worked Perfectly
I had no issues getting FrootVPN to work with Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and Spotify. All four services had no issue working through FrootVPN’s servers and revealed international content while connected to the VPN.
I had no problem accessing Mexican movie titles while connected to one of FrootVPN’s servers in Mexico.
It’s easy to unblock Netflix with FrootVPN
FrootVPN also seemed to work well with Prime Video, which recognized my locations across multiple servers. I easily used Spotify while connected to a server in Italy through the FrootVPN software. When connected to a server in Japan, I was able to access YouTube Japan without any issues.
Blocked By: Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Vudu, Disney+, and Pandora
FrootVPN didn’t seem to work with Disney+ or Hulu, which could be a deal-breaker for many users. These two streaming services either came up completely blank or showed US content only regardless of what country I was connecting through. There were also problems testing Pandora, which kept sending me to a broken help page no matter what server I connected to. Disney+ wouldn’t load at all when I tried to access the service while using FrootVPN.
Hulu seemed to show US content no matter what server I used on the VPN. Pandora redirected to a missing help article regardless of my connection through the VPN.
Speeds — Solid Connection Speeds
Speed tests revealed that FrootVPN seems to maintain reasonable connection speeds, though upload speeds could be better. FrootVPN claims that its “high speeds" are one of its main benefits as its servers are connected to a multiple 10Gbit/s backbone structure. However, my testing showed that connection speeds were about par with its competitors’ overall average. FrootVPN also claims to offer a built-in speed tester, but I could not get it to work while connected.
On a 100Mbps symmetrical connection, I averaged around 50 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up after connecting through numerous countries. The slowest speed observed consisted of a download speed of 36 Mbps and upload speed of 3 Mbps while connected to a server in Russia. FrootVPN’s speeds are adequate for general web surfing, HD streaming, and file downloading. If you’d like to try and beef up your connection speeds, FrootVPN works with the third-party WireGuard tunnel client.
FrootVPN is fast enough for most activities
Are FrootVPN’s Speeds Fast Enough for Gaming? Plenty of Speed for Online Gaming
FrootVPN’s connection speeds are more than enough for average online gaming. I was able to connect to various online games with above-average bandwidth demands with no problems. While heavy gaming sessions might require adjustments due to the slower upload speeds, FrootVPN will work just fine for most gamers.
I was able to play graphics-heavy games online with no problems
Server Network — Solid Selection of Servers Across the World
FrootVPN currently boasts over 150 servers across 32 countries, with an impressive seven servers in the US alone. In addition, the VPN has servers in countries less represented by other VPNs, specifically China, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Brazil. FrootVPN once claimed to have servers in Russia, but my testing revealed that the country wasn't on the current list. The VPN also claims that P2P is available at all server locations.

Security — Boasts Good Encryption, but With Some Caveats
When testing FrootVPN's security claims, I found that the VPN utilizes 2048-bit encryption to secure your data, along with a PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) key for cryptographic privacy and another layer of data authentication. FrootVPN also supports TLS1.1 and upwards.
With the Windows program, users can connect to the VPN’s servers using L2TP, PPTP, IPSec IKEv1, and OpenVPN.
The 2048-bit encryption claim, however, requires more research as FrootVPN is referring to the Handshake protocol. The actual data encryption is still a bit of a mystery.
While FrootVPN utilizes a kill switch, its functionality was hit or miss during my testing. The kill switch is tied into Windows Firewall. If you have it disabled or use another firewall, the kill switch will claim to work when it actually isn't doing anything.
Privacy — Truly Anonymous Surfing
I had no issues hiding my true IP address and location while using FrootVPN. There didn't appear to be any data leaks, no matter what server or location I used.
FrootVPN claims that it has a no-logs policy. While I didn't find anything that contradicted that claim, the company hasn't been audited or at least hasn't released any audit results in years. It’s also important to note that FrootVPN is located in Sweden, a Nine Eyes jurisdiction.
FrootVPN doesn’t keep any logs
Torrenting — Solid P2P Network Across all Locations
Torrent users have reason to rejoice over FrootVPN. Torrenting works well as a P2P network is available on all servers, according to the company. In fact, FrootVPN was originally promoted on Pirate Bay when they first came online. Users should have no problem with torrenting and P2P connections while using FrootVPN.
Does FrootVPN Work in China: Maybe?
FrootVPN offers servers in China, though it's hard to tell if individuals in China can utilize the VPN. As China's internet policies are always changing and become more complicated, it's difficult to say if certain VPNs work in the country. FrootVPN has yet to respond to my customer service questions on the issue.
Simultaneous Device Connections — 5 Devices at a Time
A FrootVPN subscription allows users to connect up to 5 devices at once. And you can set up your router to work with FrootVPN to allow seamless connections for other devices.
During my test, I was able to connect a smartphone, laptop, and tablet at the same time with no problems at all.
Another important feature to note is that FrootVPN allows even more devices to connect if you utilize a router connection.
Device Compatibility — All Major Devices and Operating Systems Supported
One of the most important issues with any VPN is device compatibility. FrootVPN boasts compatibility with Windows and Unix/Linux systems, along with iOS and Android devices. FrootVPN is also compatible with routers that support VPN installations.
Mac users, however, may feel left out as the VPN software is designed for Windows PCs. FrootVPN does provide instructions to install the VPN on Mac computers.
Even more interesting is the fact that FrootVPN can also be installed on Chromebooks and routers thanks to manual installation guides and the use of OpenVPN.
