DigibitVPN Review 2024 - Keep This in Mind Before Buying

Our Score: 4.8/10
Ranked 136th out of 198 VPNs
Lawrence Wachira Updated on 19th December 2024 Fact-checked by Matthew Amos Editor

DigibitVPN, powered by DigibitUK, promises a solid mix of security, performance, and affordability. This positioning makes it seem like a strong contender against the top VPNs in the industry. But does it have what it takes to rival the best, or is its low price a reflection of its shortcomings?

Overall, DigibitVPN missed the mark. The real letdown is the difficulty of signing up, its small server network, and its lack of customer support. For a better experience, I recommend you choose a reliable VPN from this list instead, as they outshine DigibitVPN in every aspect.

DigibitVPN Pros, Cons, and Needed Improvements

  • Good security features

Digibit VPN uses virtually uncrackable AES 256-bit encryption to protect your data.

  • Zero-logs privacy policy

The VPN doesn’t collect or hold onto sensitive information. So, none will be shared with third parties.

  • Poor customer support

I couldn’t connect with DigibitVPN’s support team during testing.

  • No guaranteed refunds

You'll need to make a strong case to the VPN to qualify for a pro-rata refund.

  • Sign-up issues

This convoluted process makes it way too hard to test out the VPN.

Streaming — Likely To Face Issues With Popular Streaming Services

5.0

DigitbitVPN claims to support secure streaming from anywhere. However, its website provides no details on the platforms it works with. Most top VPN providers share this information along with tips on how to solve known issues to facilitate smooth streaming. The fact that DigitbitVPN doesn’t state what platforms it works with makes me doubt that it can be used for reliable streaming.

The VPN does offer Netflix-optimized servers, but its overall network is quite small. Small networks like this tend to become overcrowded, which might cause buffering, poor video quality, and long load times. So, that’s another potential issue for streaming with Digibit.

The best VPNs offer specialty servers for popular platforms like Hulu, Netflix, and BBC iPlayer that can securely access these services from anywhere. You can explore this list of the best VPNs for streaming to stay safe online while you watch your favorite movies, TV shows, and more.

Be advised. The VPNs we recommend usually follow a strict no-logging policy that states they won’t record your online activities. That leaves you solely responsible for how you use them for streaming, torrenting, and more. The vpnMentor team and I urge you to always uphold all copyright laws.

Speed — Small Network Could Cause Major Performance Drops

5.0

It’s possible that DigibitVPN could cause a significant drop in speed, as it doesn’t disclose the actual size of its network. An extensive network typically helps prevent slowdowns caused by overcrowding. The fact that DigibitVPN keeps it private — something VPNs with extensive coverage usually highlight — hints that its network may not be large enough to support the fast speeds it claims.

You also can’t choose between multiple protocols to improve your speeds. While I’m glad it lets you connect through OpenVPN (a safe and reputable protocol), there’s no option to access faster options like WireGuard and IKEv2. If you’re looking for a VPN with excellent speeds across the board, check out the fastest VPNs.

Gaming — Could Cause Issues While You Play Online

5.0

The Digibit site doesn’t mention gaming, which makes me doubt its suitability for gamers. All I could find in its blog was one article about ISP throttling. It also doesn’t offer extensive support routers, which is one of the only ways you can protect your connection while playing gaming consoles.

When you’re playing games online, you want your ping below 85ms. This is a measurement of how quickly your data can travel, and when it’s higher you’ll encounter lag. Unfortunately, distant servers cause ping to rise more drastically than download or upload speeds, and Digibit’s small network might not have the nearby servers you need to avoid lag.

To enjoy online games safely, without losing your competitive edge, I recommend taking a look at our best VPNs for gaming.

Server Network — Unlikely To Have a Vast Network

3.5

DigibitVPN advertises a global network of fast servers but offers little detail on the total number and their locations. The servers available for manual configuration that support OpenVPN are the only ones publicly available, and I could count 349 of them spread across North America, South America, Asia, and Europe. Its blog also highlights recent additions, including servers in Hong Kong, Holland, and Manchester.

I have a feeling the VPN offers limited details about its network because there’s not much to show. Transparency about server coverage is a key factor for me when picking a VPN. I usually prioritize services with numerous servers near my location for faster and more reliable connections.

One standout feature is that DigibitVPN owns 100% its servers, which is good for privacy since it eliminates third-party interference. Ownership may also suggest the VPN uses private DNS servers, which add an extra layer of security as they can be configured to prevent third parties (like ISPs or hackers) from intercepting or tampering with your DNS traffic.

The VPN boasts a 99% uptime guarantee for its servers, a claim usually associated with industry leaders like ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, and NordVPN. If this statement is factual, it means you're less likely to face disconnection issues.

However, it’s unclear whether it uses RAM-based servers or if its servers are virtual or physically located where it claims. Virtual servers can offer a safer alternative in regions where physical servers aren’t practical due to regulatory measures. If you prefer a VPN with a transparent server network and plenty of options, check out this list of top-quality VPNs with thousands of servers worldwide.

Does DigibitVPN Work in China? Maybe

I can’t say for sure if DigibitVPN works in China, but its website highlights servers in Hong Kong that could help boost your privacy while you're there. Most VPNs that work in China also offer advanced obfuscation that makes VPN traffic look like regular traffic, but Digibit lacks this feature. I reached out to support for more details, but sadly, I never received a reply.

China frequently blocks VPNs, but there are no documented cases of individuals being prosecuted for using them. My team and I do not condone illegal activities, so it’s important to understand the local laws before using a VPN there. If you choose to use one, check out these providers that have been proven to work in China.

Security — Military-Grade Encryption With Some Nice Features

7.0

DigibitVPN offers a solid set of features typically found in some of the top providers. Nothing leads me to suspect that it's unsafe. However, there are still some additional settings I’d like to see, such as obfuscation, perfect forward secrecy, malware, ad blocking, and parental controls — features that are now standard in top VPNs.

If you're looking for a VPN with more comprehensive options to secure your traffic, take a look at these highly secure VPNs that offer a full range of features to enhance online safety.

Encryption

DigibitVPN uses AES 256-bit encryption to keep you safe online. It’s the same encryption used by banks, security companies, and NASA to protect confidential information. All the top VPNs utilize it, so I’ve got no complaints here.

Security Protocols

DigibitVPN appears to only support the OpenVPN protocol as it provides .ovpn files for manual setup. The website doesn’t mention any other protocols, and my inquiry to support went unanswered. OpenVPN is the safest protocol around because it’s open source, meaning experts regularly inspect and address potential vulnerabilities. But, the best VPNs usually give you a range of protocols to choose from.

Split Tunneling

With this feature, you can specify the apps or websites that use the VPN connection and which access the internet directly. I personally use it to route all traffic except my torrenting activity outside the secure tunnel when downloading files. This helps boost my speeds, as only my P2P traffic is encrypted.

Kill Switch

This feature helps prevent the accidental exposure of sensitive data, such as your real IP address, while using DigibitVPN. It automatically terminates your internet connection whenever you switch servers, your computer enters sleep mode, there's a power flicker, or a server disconnects unexpectedly. It’s a necessary feature that every VPN needs, and I don’t feel truly safe without it.

Privacy — Good Policy But There Are Some Issues

7.0

DigibitVPN has the kind of comprehensive policy I love to see, though I’d prefer it operated from a different region. It’s also unfortunate that its claims haven’t been proven with an independent audit. Otherwise, this is one of its strongest areas, and it’s most likely a trustworthy VPN.

Does DigibitVPN Keep Logs? No

DigibitVPN doesn’t log your browsing history, IP address, data usage, connection timestamps, or server choices. However, it does require your payment details and email address when you register on its website. If you prefer more privacy, you can opt for paying with cryptocurrency and using a one-time email.

Screenshot showing DigibitVPN doesn't log sensitive informationI value how upfront DigibitVPN is about the data it gathers

Be aware that its software may transmit generic diagnostic data to a third-party analytics provider to sort out connection issues or bugs. DigibitVPN also states that it may comply with court orders to investigate certain matters, which makes me a bit uneasy since its zero-logs policy hasn’t really been put to the test yet.

Was DigibitVPN Audited? No

To date, DigibitVPN’s apps and privacy policy remain un audited by independent experts. Leading VPNs often invite external reviewers to validate their claims, and I’d like to see the VPN take a similar step. Right now, you have to rely entirely on DigibitVPN’s word when it comes to its no-logs policy. But to be fair, I am sympathetic that this can be a costly endeavor for a smaller VPN to undergo.

Based in the UK

DigibitVPN operates out of the UK, which is part of the 5/9/14 Eyes Alliances — a group of countries that agree to share their citizens' online data. Personally, I feel more at ease with VPNs based outside this alliance since there’s always a chance they could be pressured into adjusting their policies.

Torrenting — Small Network Can Limit Its P2P Performance

5.0

DigibitVPN does allow torrenting, but its smaller network might not be ideal for downloading files. With around 300 servers spread across 4 continents, your downloading and seeding speeds could suffer. It also doesn’t provide P2P specific features like special torrenting servers and port forwarding. You can achieve better results with a P2P-optimized VPN from this list.

Torrenting itself is legal in many countries, but downloading pirated content without permission is not. My team and I strongly discourage any illegal actions. We ask that you please stick to torrents within the public domain to ensure you're staying within the legal boundaries.

Installation & Apps

5.0

Installation & Apps — Apps for Major Devices That We Couldn’t Test

We couldn't install any DigibitVPN apps due to multiple issues. First, the sign-up process wasn’t working; every time we clicked the Sign up now button on the homepage, we were met with the "OOPS! That page cannot be found" error.

We also couldn't find the app on the Play Store, and clicking the download button for the Windows installer didn’t initiate any action.

creenshot showing that DigibitVPN's Android app isn't currently available.DigibitVPN's website also doesn’t offer a direct APK download

Because of this, I can't comment on the VPN's ease of use or the uniformity of its app interfaces.

Device Compatibility

DigibitVPN supports Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Fire TV Stick, and VPN-compatible routers. The VPN also provides .ovpn files for devices that support OpenVPN clients, including Linux. To get these files, you’ll need to submit a ticket. However, since customer support is seemingly nonexistent, you might not get the help you need.

It doesn’t offer any browser extensions or Smart DNS. Some VPNs provide the latter to easily connect devices that do not natively support VPN apps by adjusting their DNS settings, namely smart TVs and gaming consoles.

Popular Devices It Supports

Devices Compatibility
Windows
Mac
Fire TV
Linux Manual installation via .ovpn files
Android
iOS

To be fair, I’d love to see the VPN address the sign up and app download issues soon so potential users can unlock its full potential. It would also be great if it offered clear, step-by-step instructions for manual setup on devices it doesn’t natively support, rather than requiring users to contact support. Reaching out to support should be a last resort, only needed when the instructions are hard to follow.

Simultaneous Device Connections

You can connect up to 6 devices to DigibitVPN at once, which is within the typical range most VPNs offer. However, some services, like Private Internet Access (PIA) and Surfshark, raise the bar with unlimited device connections.

Pricing

4.0
Monthly
$ 4 / month per month

Pricing — No Free Version or Trial, and It’s Not Worth Purchasing

Most VPNs provide a variety of pricing options, but DigibitVPN limits you to just one: a monthly subscription. I value flexibility in pricing because it makes it easier to choose a plan that suits my needs. And while its monthly plan is quite cheap (less than some VPNs yearly plans), the lack of a true money-back guarantee makes it less attractive.

The VPN offers pro-rata refunds at its sole discretion. To qualify, you must prove that the service was either unavailable or unusable and demonstrate that you made an effort to contact customer support. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to test this myself, so I can’t vouch for how smooth or frustrating the process might be.

Additionally, the only payment method available is PayPal, which feels restrictive in an era where competitors provide a wide range of payment methods, including credit cards and cryptocurrencies. If you’re looking for a risk-free VPN with more payment options, I recommend you explore this list of secure, affordable, premium VPNs instead.

Reliability & Support

2.0

Reliability and Support — You’re Probably Not Going To Hear Back

Despite boasting live chat, support tickets, and social media options like X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and Instagram, I couldn’t get any assistance.

The live chat feature was missing from the website. In our past tests, it showed up after 30 minutes of searching, but this time it wasn’t there at all. Messaging on X was also unavailable, as the option didn’t appear. The ticket system was the only working option, but even after 4 days, I still hadn’t received a response, which is disappointing considering past replies came within hours.

The content library didn’t do much to save the day, either. The blog section had just 5 articles. While the FAQs were somewhat useful, they only addressed the basics. The best VPNs never neglect their customers; they offer 24/7 support, detailed guides, FAQs, and helpful resources.

The Bottom Line

Final Verdict — Has Potential If It Addresses All Its Existing Issues

There are a few areas where Digibit shows potential. For example, it seems to offer excellent security features and doesn’t log any personally identifiable information.

With that said, I have to recommend avoiding DigibitVPN for now. It provides little information about its streaming, gaming, and torrenting capabilities, as well as its server network. Additionally, its customer support is nearly nonexistent, and it’s way too difficult to sign up. Rather than dealing with these restrictions, try a premium VPN that offers essential and advanced features.

FAQs on DigibitVPN

Is DigibitVPN safe?

Yes, Digibit will keep you safe online. It uses the nearly unbreakable AES 256-bit encryption level. The VPN also comes with a kill switch, which acts as a failsafe to block your connection if your server ever disconnects. Plus, it comes with the OpenVPN protocol, largely regarded as the safest option.

Is DigibitVPN free?

No, DigibitVPN doesn’t offer a free version or trial, so there’s no way to test it out beforehand. Plus, refunds aren’t as easy to come by as with the top VPNs, so make sure you’re confident before hitting that subscribe button.

How does DigibitVPN compare to other VPNs?

DigibitVPN doesn’t quite measure up to the industry leaders. Even where it excels, top competitors are miles ahead. Key issues include sign-up and download problems, a lack of transparency about its network, and a frustratingly hard-to-reach customer support team.

Customer service is lousy

Been trying to get an issue fixed for weeks, if they reacted any slower they would be going backward. Cut and paste responses most of the time with days in between replies. Good job I'm not holding my breath.
