NordVPN's New Protocol Helps You Bypass Network Blocks

NordVPN's New Protocol Helps You Bypass Network Blocks

NordVPN has launched a new protocol called NordWhisper, designed to help bypass network restrictions that typically block VPN connections. The company announced that the protocol will allow for a smoother and more reliable browsing experience in environments where traditional VPNs are often restricted, such as schools, offices, and public WiFi networks.

According to NordVPN’s official blog, NordWhisper mimics regular web traffic using web tunnel technology. Unlike traditional VPN protocols such as OpenVPN or WireGuard, which have identifiable traffic patterns, NordWhisper disguises encrypted VPN traffic to make it appear like normal internet browsing. This approach makes it harder for network administrators to detect and block VPN usage. However, NordVPN warns that the protocol may result in slower connection speeds due to the additional masking process.

The NordWhisper protocol is being rolled out gradually for Windows, Android, and Linux, with more platforms expected to receive support in the future. The VPN’s update highlighted that this protocol is intended not only to bypass restrictions but also to ensure that people can work and communicate securely in places where internet freedom is limited.

In a statement to The Verge, NordVPN’s Chief Technology Officer Marijus Briedis explained, “It’s not just about getting around network restrictions. It’s about empowering people to work, communicate, and access essential services securely and freely, even in the most restrictive environments.”

However, CNET pointed out that, while NordWhisper is effective at bypassing blocks, the protocol’s speed issues might mean that it’s not ideal for high-bandwidth activities such as 4K streaming.

NordVPN is not the only company working on solutions to evade VPN restrictions either. CNET also compared NordWhisper to Proton VPN’s Stealth protocol, which masks VPN traffic as ordinary internet activity in a similar way. With VPN restrictions becoming more common worldwide, VPN providers are increasingly developing new technologies to allow users to access the internet freely and securely.
