7 Best VPNs for Multiple Devices — Updated in 2024

Keira Waddell Updated on 10th June 2024 Fact-checked by Christine Johansen Senior Writer

Not being able to share your VPN account with your family members or housemates is frustrating. No one wants to pay for multiple subscriptions to ensure all their devices are protected. Even VPNs that cover all your devices can significantly slow down your internet speeds when multiple devices are connected.

My team and I tested 70+ VPNs that support multiple devices to find the best one. We connected them to multiple devices simultaneously to see which ones came out on top. Whether you want to share your account with family members or just have a lot of tech, our recommended VPNs allow you to connect to several devices at once without slowing you down.

I recommend ExpressVPN because it’s one of the few VPNs that has a native router app to cover all your WiFi-enabled gadgets. It also offers apps for a ton of different devices and operating systems with military-grade security and a high-speed global network. You can use ExpressVPN on up to 8 devices (or on all your devices if you install the router app). If it’s not for you, you’re backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. Editors' Note: Expressvpn and this site are in the same ownership group.

Best VPNs for Multiple Devices — Full Analysis (Updated 2024)

1. ExpressVPN — Router App Makes It Easy to Protect Unlimited Devices

Best Feature Native router app allows for easy setup to protect every device on your WiFi network
Simultaneous Device Connections 8 simultaneous device connections or unlimited with the router setup
Router/Firmware Compatibility Asus, Linksys, Netgear, DD-WRT, D-Link, Netduma, Sabai, Tomato, TP-Link; pre-configured routers available
Works With Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, ESPN, and more
Editors' Note: Expressvpn and this site are in the same ownership group.

ExpressVPN's native router app covers all your household devices under one VPN connection. Plus, it provides custom router firmware — most VPNs don’t offer all this, so router setup can be complicated. ExpressVPN also has handy installation guides on its website for different routers. So, you can overcome the 8 connections limit and protect your entire network, even devices like Google Nest or Amazon Echo speakers.

The router app even lets you sort your devices into groups, and you can connect each of them to a different server location. With many other VPNs, your devices will use the same location the router is using. This makes it a great choice for families or households that want to use the VPN for different activities simultaneously.

Screenshot of ExpressVPN router installation page showing compatible routersExpressVPN also offers its own Aircove router as an easy solution

Its speeds make it a top choice for performing high-bandwidth activities on multiple devices at once. I tested ExpressVPN on nearby and long-distance servers, and it was the fastest I tried. My speeds only dropped by 12% when I connected my iPhone, iPad, Android, laptop, and PC to the same server. This is impressive as many VPNs slow your speeds substantially (up to 80%) when using more than 1 device.

It makes sense that ExpressVPN is a bit more expensive than other VPNs (prices start at $6.67/month). Given you aren’t limited to the number of devices you can connect with the router app, it works out to be really great value. ExpressVPN also offers a money-back guarantee, so you can try it risk-free for 30 days. If you’re not impressed, you can request a refund by reaching out to its 24/7 live chat.

Useful Features

  • MediaStreamer. ExpressVPN’s Smart DNS service lets users access UK and US content on devices that don’t support a full VPN. This means you don’t need to install ExpressVPN on your router to stream on devices like smart TVs and gaming consoles.
  • Split tunneling. You can use its split tunneling feature to choose which traffic is encrypted through the VPN and which traffic goes through your normal connection. Since it only has to encrypt some of your traffic, you’ll have better speeds.
  • P2P-enabled server network. ExpressVPN’s entire network supports torrenting, which gives you more freedom to find the fastest available server for torrenting.
  • Advanced encryption. In addition to its military-grade AES-256 encryption, you’ll get extra protection with perfect forward secrecy. This frequently changes your encryption keys to further minimize the (already small) risk of snoops reading your data.
ExpressVPN Offer July 2024: For a limited time only, you can get an ExpressVPN subscription for up to 49% off! Don't miss out!

2. Private Internet Access — Unlimited Connections to Share With Your Household

Best Feature Offers great value, letting you connect all the devices in your household
Simultaneous Device Connections Unlimited simultaneous device connections with one subscription
Router/Firmware Compatibility Asus, DD-WRT, Merlin, pfSense, LEDE; pre-configured routers available
Works With Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and more
Editors' Note: Private Internet Access and this site are in the same ownership group.

Private Internet Access (PIA) offers unlimited simultaneous device connections. You don’t have to manage your devices in the VPN’s settings or worry about kicking one off to use another. I tested PIA by connecting it to multiple devices; my speeds only dropped by 20% when 15 devices were connected (compared to 14% with just 1 device connected). It’s not quite as fast as ExpressVPN, but it’s more than fast enough for streaming or torrenting.

PIA is a favorite among torrenters like myself. Its entire network of 29,650 servers supports P2P transfers and makes it easy to get fast downloads. Port forwarding (on select servers) also allows you to connect to more peers, which can boost download speeds even more. Even with multiple devices connected simultaneously, my downloads only took a few minutes.

Screenshot of PIA's customized security settingsPrivate Internet Access gives you all the settings you need to torrent safely on unlimited devices

It also offers robust security features, including AES-256 encryption and two kill switch options. What’s more, you can alternate between security protocols, including WireGuard and OpenVPN, and encryption levels. Although OpenVPN is known to be the most secure, I prefer WireGuard because it’s faster.

A slight concern is that it’s headquartered in the US, which is part of the 14-Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. However, PIA doesn’t log any personal information and has been asked multiple times to provide logs in court but has never had anything to share.

Plans start at $2.03/month and are all backed by a standard 30-day money-back guarantee.

Useful Features

  • MACE malware blocker. This protects your devices by blocking ads, trackers, and malware at the DNS level. Because this method of content blocking uses less memory, you might find MACE drains your device’s battery less than other ad-blocking apps and browser extensions.
  • Smart DNS. PIA’s Smart DNS feature makes it possible to access and stream on your smart TV, gaming console, Chromebook, and more.
  • Vast compatibility. The PIA app can be downloaded for iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, and more. It’s one of the few VPNs that offers a graphical user interface for Linux. You have to install it manually on routers, but you can purchase pre-configured ones to save time and hassle.
July 2024 Update: PIA doesn't usually have deals or discounts (it's already so affordable), but right now you can get a new subscription for a crazy 83% off!

3. CyberGhost — Speciality Servers to Stream, Torrent, and Game on 7 Devices

Best Feature Optimized servers regularly maintained to ensure fast and reliable connections
Simultaneous Device Connections 7 simultaneous connections to protect your go-to gadgets at the same time
Router/Firmware Compatibility DD-WRT, Tomato, Merlin; pre-configured routers available
Works With Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and more
Editors' Note: CyberGhost VPN and this site are in the same ownership group.

CyberGhost offers specialty servers optimized for streaming, torrenting, and gaming, and you can use these on any of your 7 devices. I was able to watch One Day on my PC on UK Netflix while I torrented some (public domain) old-school sci-fi movies on my laptop, and my roommate watched BBC iPlayer on a UK server. None of us noticed any significant slowdowns. There are also servers optimized for accessing several Netflix libraries, Hulu, Max, DAZN, and Amazon Prime Video.

Screenshot of CyberGhost's optimized servers in the appCyberGhost also allows you to add servers to your favorites by clicking on the star beside it

While I was testing these servers, I found my average base speed drop was around 12%. With 7 connected at the same time, this increased to around 18%. I could still download a 500MB file in less than a minute, even with this speed drop. You won’t have to worry about your torrents slowing down considerably or experiencing major lag when you game, even if everyone in your household is using the VPN.

You can connect more than 7 devices by installing CyberGhost on your router. Keep in mind that you can’t connect each device to a different location like you can with ExpressVPN. Instead, all devices will use the same server location and settings as your router.

One thing I found a bit annoying about CyberGhost is that once you reach the maximum number of devices, you have to sign out on every device before you can add another one. It’s not the best user experience, particularly if you’re not using a password manager to speed up the login process. You get 84% off with a long-term plan, and this also comes with a 45-day money-back guarantee (14 days on the 1-month plan).

Useful Features

  • Compatible with tons of devices. CyberGhost offers apps for iOS, Android, Mac, Windows, Fire devices, and more. It even offers a dedicated app for Apple Watch, which is something you don’t see often with VPNs.
  • User-friendly apps. CyberGhost’s Best Server Location feature means you can connect to a fast server with a single click. This means that everyone, no matter how familiar they are with VPNs, can protect their device without needing extra help from other members of their household.
  • Robust encryption. It offers AES 256-bit encryption, a no-logs policy, and a kill switch. You can also choose between multiple security protocols, including superfast WireGuard and extra-secure OpenVPN.
July 2024 Deal: CyberGhost is currently offering 84% off its most popular plan! Take advantage of this offer now and save more on your CyberGhost subscription.

4. NordVPN — 10 Simultaneous Connections, Plus Meshnet for Remote Device Access

Best Feature Meshnet feature lets you easily access your devices remotely
Simultaneous Device Connections 10 simultaneous device connections; unlimited if you set it up on a router
Router/Firmware Compatibility ASUS, DD-WRT, GI.iNET, Mikrotik, NetDUMA, OPNsense, OpenWRT, Padavan, Sabai, Tomato, pfSense, DrayTek, EdgeRouter, TP-Link; pre-configured routers available
Works With Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Vudu, and more

NordVPN's Meshnet gives you direct remote access to up to 10 devices. Plus, with 10 simultaneous device connections, you can use Meshnet even if other family or household members are connected to the VPN.

Meshnet creates a secure, private network to your other devices so you can remotely access files on your home computer. Or, you can share data and files securely between devices, and all data transmitted between them is encrypted. It’s a great tool to have if you travel a lot or regularly need to help other family or household members with their devices.

Screenshot of NordVPN's Meshnet feature in macOS appTo make sure the devices can communicate remotely, go to "Preferences" and enable the Meshnet feature

NordVPN offers great compatibility across lots of devices. I also really appreciated that its features don’t differ across different devices, so you can access features like the kill switch and split tunneling no matter what device you’re using.

The only issue is that NordVPN can take a while to connect to servers when more than 1 device is connected — sometimes, over a minute. However, I had no issues once the connection was established.

NordVPN subscriptions start from $6.39/month. It’s also backed by a money-back guarantee, so you can try it for free for 30 days and request a refund if you're not 100% happy with it.

Useful Features

  • Great speeds. NordVPN gave me consistent speeds, even with multiple devices connected. Thanks to its speedy NordLynx protocol, when I tested 7 servers across the UK, US, and Japan servers on my Windows laptop, my speeds dropped by 14%. This dropped again to around 23% when I connected 4 other devices.
  • Threat Protection. This feature safeguards against inadvertently downloading harmful files that could compromise your devices. Plus, it effectively combats trackers and intrusive advertisements, resulting in a more seamless and secure browsing experience.
  • Large server network. NordVPN’s server network spans 111 countries, so you’re bound to find one in the location you need.

5. Surfshark — Alerts You of Malware on an Unlimited Number of Devices

Best Feature CleanWeb feature keeps all your devices safe from malware
Simultaneous Device Connections Unlimited simultaneous device connections for all your family’s devices
Router/Firmware Compatibility ASUS, DD-WRT, Tomato; pre-configured routers available
Works With Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Vudu, and more

Surfshark's ad and malware blocker (CleanWeb) can help you surf the web free from intrusive ads. Even better, you can use CleanWeb on all your Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac devices at once, as Surfshark gives you unlimited simultaneous connections. During my tests, I was alerted when malware was detected on any of the free streaming sites I visited.

This VPN also makes day-to-day browsing less frustrating thanks to its Pause feature. This lets you avoid captchas and issues accessing location-sensitive services (like banking apps) by putting the VPN on hold for a certain period, after which the connection resumes automatically. I paused Surfshark for 30 minutes on my Windows laptop while using my online bank account. After that, the VPN seamlessly reconnected.

Screenshot of Surfshark's Pause feature in macOS appYou don’t need to remember to turn Surfshark back on when using the Pause option

I was initially concerned about my data privacy with Surfshark’s headquarters in the Netherlands (part of the 14 Eyes alliance). But, since it follows a strict no-logs policy, you can be sure it doesn’t collect or store your personal information.

Surfshark offers affordable long-term plans for only $2.19/month, and all plans come with a reliable 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it out with zero risk. If it doesn’t work for you, claiming a refund through the 24/7 live chat is straightforward.

Useful Features

  • RAM-only servers. These servers ensure that all traces of your personal data that could be traced back to you disappear whenever the server reboots. So, there’s very little chance third parties can get hold of data associated with you. Your data is further secured with AES 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, and IP/DNS leak protection.
  • Fast speeds. I tested its servers in Canada, the US, Germany, and the UK, and had an average speed drop of 15%. Even when I connected 9 devices at once, my speeds dropped by 26% vs. my base speed. It was a noticeable drop, but still more than enough for streaming.

6. IPVanish — Great Speeds to Stream on Unlimited Devices Without Lag

Best Feature Fast speeds over short and long distances, no matter how many devices are connected
Simultaneous Device Connections Unlimited simultaneous device connections makes it great value for money
Router/Firmware Compatibility ASUS, DD-WRT, Tomato; pre-configured routers available
Works With Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, and more

IPVanish also offers unlimited simultaneous device connections, which is great for larger households or families. Plus, since it’s also compatible with a lot of devices and operating systems, you’ll have plenty of flexibility to share your subscription with family members and friends.

It's more than fast enough to stream on all your devices without significant slowdowns. When I tested 10 of IPVanish’s servers on my iPhone, my base speeds dropped by 23%. Even when I connected 12 devices at once, this increased to 37%. While this sounds like a huge drop, it’s still acceptable, taking into account how many devices were connected. I could still do most of my online activities without issues.

Screenshot of IPVanish speed test results showing fast speedsWith IPVanish, I could browse securely on a dozen devices without slowdowns

The only downside is that it doesn’t work well with all streaming sites. It can access Netflix US, Max, and Hulu, but it’s not capable of getting around Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video’s tough geoblocks. However, I was able to stream BBC iPlayer and UK Netflix with no issues.

You can sign up for IPVanish for as low as $2.19/month. Its long-term plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, which is easy to claim if you need it. To get mine, I just logged into my account dashboard and filled out a refund request form — I had my money back in my account in 4 days.

Useful Features

  • Entire network is P2P enabled. IPVanish’s entire network supports P2P traffic (and it comes with a SOCKS5 proxy to boost P2P speeds), so it’s an excellent option for torrenting safely.
  • Owns its server network. This removes the risk of any third-party interference since IPVanish is the only party that can access its servers.

7. PrivateVPN — Stealth VPN for Extra Privacy on up to 10 Devices

Best Feature Obfuscation lets you use your device on devices on any network, including public WiFi
Simultaneous Device Connections 10 simultaneous device connections to keep all your devices protected at once
Router/Firmware Compatibility ASUS, Linksys, DD-WRT, OpenWRT, pfSense, Tomato, TP-Link
Works With Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, Vudu, and more

PrivateVPN offers advanced privacy via Stealth VPN (obfuscation) that you can use on 10 devices simultaneously. It’s available on iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows. This feature hides the fact that you’re using a VPN, allowing it to overcome network firewalls at school or work. Plus, it helps PrivateVPN work in countries with strict online censorship, like China.

Screenshot of PrivateVPN Stealth VPN in Advanced View featuresStealth VPN is available in every version of PrivateVPN, including desktop, mobile phone, and router

Unfortunately, I had some inconsistent speeds with PrivateVPN. When I tested its nearby servers, my base speeds dropped by 20%, which is still good. However, on long distances, my speeds dropped by 57%. I experienced drops the more devices were connected, as well. But my speeds were still more than enough to stream in HD.

You can subscribe to PrivateVPN for just $2/month. It also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you’re not satisfied, you can always get a refund. Just keep in mind that even though PrivateVPN offers 24/7 live chat support, you have to ask for a refund through email.

Useful Features

  • Works well with streaming platforms. Despite PrivateVPN's small server network, it can access Netflix, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer. It also works well with Hulu and Max, making it possible to watch US shows and movies from anywhere.
  • IP/DNS leak protection. When I tested 10 of its servers on ipleak.net, I didn’t find any leaks, so you can rest assured the data on your family’s devices are protected. It also offers all the standard security features (256-bit encryption, top security protocols, a kill switch, and adheres to a strict no-logs policy).

Tips on How to Choose the Best VPN for Multiple Devices

A reliable VPN for multiple connections should be compatible with various devices and operating systems. Moreover, it should provide you with robust security features and a high-speed global server network to let you stream and torrent without any hiccups. I looked for and tested the following features to determine my list:

  • Multiple device connections. A good VPN for multiple devices will offer at least 5 simultaneous device connections under 1 subscription. Most of the VPNs I shortlisted allow you to connect 5–10 devices at the same time. However, some allow you to have unlimited device connections, and I’ve included a couple of those too.
  • Vast compatibility. To use a VPN on multiple devices, it should be compatible with all of your devices. I made sure only to shortlist VPNs that are compatible with all major operating systems, routers, and popular browsers. Router support means you can use the VPN on any device connected to your network. Some of the VPNs even have a Smart DNS functionality to set them up on gaming consoles and smart TVs easily.
  • User-friendly apps. The VPN app should be easy to install on all compatible devices. An intuitive app interface is also important so that even non-technical users in your household can use the VPN. It’s also important to ensure the app quality is consistent across different devices so that you’re not missing out on functionality.
  • Good value. When considering a VPN for multiple devices, you need to take price into consideration. For example, IPVanish has a slightly higher price point but offers unlimited connections. While CyberGhost is a bit cheaper, offering 7 It could be argued that IPVanish has better value overall even though it costs more, depending on how many devices you need to cover.
  • Fast speeds. You need good speeds to use a VPN on multiple devices. I tested the speeds of all the listed VPNs on multiple devices and compared them to a single-device connection. All of them performed well, with many devices using the VPN at once.
  • Customer support. It’s possible you’ll require assistance while installing your VPN on certain devices (like those without native apps), so access to knowledgeable 24/7 customer support is crucial.
  • Advanced security and privacy features. A good VPN should have AES 256-bit encryption, IP/DNS leak protection, and a kill switch, at the very least. Moreover, all of these VPNs adhere to strict no-logs policies and won’t put your family’s privacy at risk.

Quick Guide: How to Set Up a VPN on Multiple Devices in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Download a VPN for multiple devices. My top recommendation is ExpressVPN. It offers 8 simultaneous connections, and you can protect all your devices if you configure it on your router.
  2. Connect to a server. Choose a location from the server list and click Connect. You can connect to a different server on every device.
  3. Start browsing. Now, you and your household can safely browse, stream, or torrent on all of your devices.

Editors' Note: Expressvpn and this site are in the same ownership group.

How to Set Up the Same VPN on Unlimited Devices

You can circumvent the limited number of devices by installing it on your router if you don’t choose a VPN that offers unlimited simultaneous device connections. Doing so enables every device connected to your WiFi network to be covered by the VPN. However, some VPN router setups are more complicated than others.

If your VPN doesn’t have a router app and firmware, it will require more steps to set up. It’s important to do so carefully and seek support from the VPN provider, as setting it up incorrectly can damage your router. For this reason, I recommend opting for a VPN with a native router app and custom firmware.

For example, ExpressVPN offers both custom firmware and a native router app that’s compatible with lots of different routers. It also has detailed setup guides on its website for each router type to facilitate an easier, quicker installation. Plus, its customer support is on hand 24/7 if you encounter any issues.

Here’s how to set up ExpressVPN on unlimited devices via the native router app:

  1. Sign in to your ExpressVPN account and download the custom firmware. Navigate to the router setup section and download the custom firmware for your router model. This firmware allows your router to manage connections and security protocols directly.
  2. Access your router's admin panel by entering its IP address. Type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar in a new browser tab. If you are using an Asus router, you can also visit router.asus.com. Sign in with the default credentials on the bottom of your router.
  3. Install the firmware to your router. In your router's admin settings, find the section for firmware updates, which is usually under Administration or Advanced settings. Here, upload the ExpressVPN firmware file you downloaded and initiate the firmware update.
  4. Reboot your router when prompted. Your router will prompt you to reboot once the firmware is installed. Once it starts up again, ExpressVPN is now installed on your router.
  5. Go to https://www.expressvpnrouter.com. On your dashboard, you can now select a VPN server and manage your ExpressVPN router app.

FAQs About VPNs for Multiple Devices

Can I share my VPN if I have a family plan?

Yes — most premium VPNs will offer multiple device connections with one subscription that others in your household can use. All VPNs listed here are great for families since they offer at least 7 simultaneous device connections (some even unlimited). Moreover, they’re all compatible with major operating systems such as macOS, iOS, Windows, and Android.

Some VPNs are also compatible with routers, meaning that you can connect all your home devices to the VPN at the same time. This covers devices like your Google Assistant or Amazon Echo that don’t typically support VPN apps.

Can multiple people use the same VPN at the same time?

Yes, multiple users can use the same VPN at the same time, provided that the VPN service allows for multiple simultaneous connections. Our top recommended VPNs allow between 7–10 simultaneous connections, and some allow you to connect unlimited devices at once.

It’s important to note that you don’t need to connect all devices to the same server when using them simultaneously. The only exception is if you’ve installed a VPN on your router, as in some cases, you’ll only be able to connect your device to the same server location that your router is using.

You should also bear in mind that you can install the VPN on as many devices as you like — you’ll just be limited to how many devices can be connected at the same time.

Do any VPNs offer unlimited device connections?

Yes, a few VPNs offer unlimited device connections, which is ideal for larger families and households. Given that these VPNs cost similar to VPNs that allow for 7–10 simultaneous connections, it means that you can protect even more devices for less per device.

You can also overcome a VPN’s simultaneous connection limit if you install the VPN on your router, as this allows you to protect every device on your network. If you do this, keep in mind that the traffic between your device and the router is not secured since encryption occurs at the router. Make sure your network is secured to prevent snoops from intercepting data before it reaches your router.

Do I need a separate VPN to cover each device?

No, most VPNs allow around 5–10 devices at one time — some even allow unlimited device connections. All you have to do is sign up for a VPN that offers multiple device connections, and that’s compatible with the devices you want to connect it to. Then, download the VPN to your device, sign in, and connect to a server as you normally would. If your VPN limits simultaneous device connections, you’ll be notified if you reach your limit.

All the VPNs I listed offer apps for multiple devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and smart TVs. By installing a VPN on your router, you can even protect devices that don’t usually support VPN apps, like smart assistants and internet-connected cameras.

How do I set up a VPN on my router to protect all my devices?

It depends on your router and the VPN. I recommend using a VPN with a native router app and custom firmware, as installing a VPN on your router without these is more time-intensive and complicated. Custom firmware for routers can be easily installed on a range of router models, allowing you to protect all of your devices with just 1 VPN connection.

Plus, these apps provide a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to configure your VPN settings. Make sure you look for VPNs that offer detailed guides on setting up their router apps on different types of routers, as it’ll save you a lot of frustration.

For VPNs without native router support, the process for setting up a VPN on your router varies depending on the router and the VPN provider you're using.

Can I get multiple VPN connections on the same IP?

There are 3 ways to connect multiple devices to the same IP. You’ll need either a static or dedicated IP address or install the VPN on your router. Static IPs are shared by other users but offer the same IP address each time you connect. Some VPN providers allow you to purchase a static IP with your subscription.

Dedicated IPs are personal IP addresses that are assigned exclusively to your account. Connecting your devices to this will give each one the same IP address. As with static IPs, you’ll usually have to pay extra each month to use a dedicated IP address.

Another way to get multiple VPN connections on the same IP is by setting up the VPN on your router. This way, all the devices that are connected to your WiFi network will automatically use the same IP address as the router is using.

Do I have to connect all my devices to the same VPN server?

No, you don’t have to connect all your devices to the same VPN server. Choosing a VPN that offers multiple device connections means that you can connect your household devices to different servers simultaneously. You can choose different servers based on your needs. For example, choosing a VPN server close to your actual location will give you better speeds.

Most VPN providers allow multiple simultaneous connections, meaning you can secure several devices with a single account. The exact number of devices you can connect simultaneously varies by provider, with some offering unlimited connections. This flexibility is ideal for households or small businesses where multiple devices need protection.

How do I connect to multiple VPNs at once?

Technically, it’s possible to use multiple VPNs at once, but I don’t recommend it. Instead, it's best to use a VPN that offers servers in a variety of regions and switch between them.

Each VPN creates a separate encrypted tunnel for your internet traffic, which can result in slower speeds, unstable connections, and potential conflicts if you try to use two at once. You’re likely to receive an error message when you try to connect to a VPN when another one is already connected to that device. Even if it works, it can cause conflicts and potentially compromise your online security and privacy.

Can I use a free VPN for multiple devices?

Yes, but I wouldn’t recommend it. In almost all cases, it’s better to choose a low-cost premium VPN that offers a money-back guarantee.

Many free VPNs only let you connect 1 device at a time. In addition, even if they do allow for multiple connections, most of them are not safe to use as they often record and sell your personal information to third-party advertisers. This completely defeats the purpose since VPNs are meant to protect your online data. Also, free VPNs often come with annoying limitations such as slower speeds, smaller server networks, and data caps to encourage you to upgrade to a paid plan.

Although most VPNs offer multiple device connections that you can share with other members of your household, it’s hard to find one that works reliably with multiple users connected at the same time. All VPNs on this list offer multiple device connections without slowing you down and great device compatibility.

I recommend ExpressVPN for multiple devices. It offers 8 simultaneous connections, it’s compatible with tons of devices and operating systems and comes with a native app for routers. You can try ExpressVPN out risk-free (it’s backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee). If it’s not for you, you can easily claim a full refund.
