How to Install Covenant Addon on Kodi: Get It Working in 2025

Husain Parvez Updated on March 19, 2025 Fact-checked by Ryan Jones Cybersecurity Researcher

Covenant seems like an easy way to stream some of the top movies, but unfortunately, working out how to install the add-on is anything but easy. With tons of conflicting information on the subject online, I decided to find out how to install Covenant once and for all.

How can I install a Covenant addon for Kodi? You’ll need to download Covenant from third-party sources, which can be tricky or dangerous. You’ve probably noticed it’s not on the official site — a lot of great add-ons are missing since Kodi is run by a non-profit that relies on volunteers1.

Installing Covenant can feel like a hassle, especially when errors pop up during the process. But don’t worry — there’s a solution. In this guide, I’ll help you find everything you need to get Covenant working while avoiding streaming and security issues.

Important. During our latest update, we once again downloaded Covenant through a third-party source, hoping it would still work. Unfortunately, the addon isn’t currently functional. The original Colossus repository was shut down in 2017, and all revival attempts have been inconsistent. Without a reliable repository, Covenant could be out of service at the moment. Here are a few alternatives to Covenant you might want to check out.
Be advised. The legality of using the Covenant addon largely depends on the content you access. Covenant provides links to various streams, including some that may offer copyrighted content without proper authorization. Streaming or downloading such content without permission is illegal in many countries. It is essential to be aware of your local laws at all times. My team at vpnMentor and I do not condone any illegal activities.

Quick Guide: How to Install Covenant on Kodi in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Enable Unknown Sources.
Kodi blocks third-party add-ons by default. To install Covenant, you need to enable the Unknown Sources option in the settings.
  2. Download and install the Covenant repository.
Download the Covenant zip file from a trusted source. Open Kodi, navigate to the addons menu, and install the repository from the zip file.
  3. Start using Covenant.
You can now stream movies and TV shows. But be aware that Covenant may feature some pirated content, which you’ll want to avoid to stay within the law.

Pro Tip: Use a VPN to Protect Yourself When Installing Covenant on Kodi

Installing Covenant addon on Kodi involves certain security and privacy risks due to its unavailability in the official Kodi repository. This means you have to download and install it from external sources, which aren't always secure. These sources can expose you to various threats, such as phishing attempts that could compromise your personal information.

When setting up a Covenant addon on Kodi, using a VPN is essential for enhancing your online privacy and security. A VPN encrypts your internet connection and hides your IP address, shielding your activities from eavesdroppers and hackers. This is particularly important when downloading and installing addons from external sources, as it helps protect your sensitive information from being intercepted.

How to Install the Covenant Addon on Kodi

Installing Covenant on Kodi has become tricky since it was removed from the official repository. So, even if you get the official repository file, it's not guaranteed to work. That said, the addon can be downloaded through third-party sources, and you can still install it by following these steps:

Step 1. Enable Addons From Unknown Sources

Covenant is a third-party addon — in order to install it you need to enable addons from unknown sources. Go to the System Menu and select the Add-ons tab to switch on the Unknown sources option.

Step 2. Add the Covenant File Source

Go to the System menu and click the File Manager icon. Click Add Source and None to add a custom source. Type the URL: https://covenant01.github.io/zip (you can also try https://cy4root2.github.io/zip) in the text box and click on OK.

Make sure to use a reliable source (if you can find one). Otherwise, if the repository doesn't work, you may get the Failed to Install Dependency error.

Step 3. Rename the Source Before Saving It

Save the file as Covenant for easy access. You should see it listed in the File Manager window. Check that your VPN is still activated so that your data remains protected while you download Covenant.

Step 4. Install the Covenant Repository Using a ZIP File

Kodi will now download the zip file and store it in the Covenant folder that you created earlier. Go to addons, select Install from zip file, and choose the Covenant folder to install the repository.

Step 5. Install the Covenant Addon from the Repository

Go back to the addons tab, choose the install from repository option, and click Covenant.

Step 6. Finish the Installation and Customize It

Within the Kodi video addons, choose Covenant and click on Install to start the installation process. Finally, customize the installation by selecting your preferred language, region, and geolocation.

Does Covenant Still Work on Kodi? Troubleshooting Common Issues

Covenant has become harder to use, especially since it’s no longer supported by the official Kodi repository. There are even times when it’s completely non-functional. Here are some troubleshooting tips that might help you get Covenant working on Kodi:

Common Errors and Solutions

  • Repository shutdowns. The original Colossus repository, which hosted Covenant, was shut down in 2017. Attempts to revive Covenant through other repositories have been hit-or-miss. To resolve this, look for working and updated repositories from trusted sources, but be cautious to avoid malicious files.
  • Outdated addon versions. Covenant hasn’t been updated for years, which means broken links and missing streams are common. You can clear the addon cache or reinstall the working version, but these fixes are not guaranteed to work. Some claim that older versions of Kodi work better with Covenant, although that hasn’t been our experience.
  • Dependency failures. Covenant relies on additional scripts to function, and missing or outdated dependencies often lead to errors. Make sure you have the latest version of Kodi and install all required dependencies manually if necessary.
  • Legal actions and crackdowns. Legal issues have led to the shutdown of many third-party repositories that hosted Covenant. Even if you find a working repository, it may disappear later. Using a VPN lets you safely access repositories and protect your connection when downloading from third-party sources.
  • ISP blocking and geo-restrictions. Some ISPs or governments block access to Covenant or its streams. This could make the addon unusable, even if the installation is successful. However, a VPN makes it possible to safely access the content you need from anywhere.

Repository URL Updates

Since the original Colossus repository was shut down, Covenant has had no official source. While there are claims of working repositories, many are unreliable or no longer available. Currently, there is no verified repository URL hosting a functional version of Covenant.

If you come across a claimed source, proceed cautiously and discuss it on the respective Reddit forums. However, be extra careful and always enable a VPN to protect your privacy and connection, regardless of the source.

Alternatives to Covenant

Covenant is a fork of the Exodus Kodi addon but works the same — gathering content hosted on various websites, often infringing on copyright laws. While the top 5 streaming services made over $5 billion in profits in 20242, it’s estimated that pirated material still receives over 200 billion views per year3.

It’s obvious why pirating is still tempting to some, but it’s never been easier to access official streams, many of them for free. Can I stream legally with Kodi? Yes, and I recommend you try out our list of official Kodi addons to stream without breaking any copyrights:

  • YouTube. You can stream YouTube content on Kodi using the official YouTube Kodi addon. It now features a wide selection of classic free movies and rentals. Premium subscriptions are also available, and you can test it first using its 30-day free trial.
  • Crackle. Launch your VPN, connect to a nearby server, and install Crackle Kodi Addon to access ad-supported movies and series for free on this US streaming service.
  • Netflix. Access a massive library of movies and TV shows online with a third-party CastagnaIT Netflix addon. It’s available nearly everywhere in the world, but you will need to choose a subscription tier to start streaming.
  • Disney+. The Slyguy addon lets you watch the latest Disney+ content on Kodi. While this is a paid streaming service, you can use its 7-day free trial to watch movies for free for a short time.
  • iPlayer WWW. Watch UK movies and TV shows for free on BBC iPlayer with its official Kodi addon. Just note that you need to get a UK IP address to stream it.

How to Stay Safe While Installing Covenant on Kodi

Installing third-party addons like Covenant can expose you to various risks. It isn’t recommended to visit, download, install, or access such third-party add-ons without the necessary protection. Here’s how you can stay safe during the process:

  • Use a VPN. A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and hides your IP address, keeping your activity private. This is especially important when downloading addons from unknown sources to protect yourself from tracking and cyber threats.
  • Download from trusted sources. When searching for Covenant, avoid random or unverified websites. Stick to trusted repositories to reduce the risk of downloading malicious files.
  • Enable antivirus software. Before downloading any files, make sure your antivirus software is active. It can scan the zip file and block any harmful elements.
  • Keep Kodi updated. Always use the latest version of Kodi for the best compatibility with addons and to protect yourself from vulnerabilities in older versions.
  • Review addon permissions. Before installing an addon, check what permissions it requests. Avoid addons that request unnecessary access to your system.

FAQs for Installing the Covenant Kodi Addon

What should I do if Covenant is not working?

If Covenant isn’t working, check if you’re using the latest repository and update Kodi to the latest version. However, if it still doesn’t work, there is a high possibility that the addon is no longer functional. If you’re trying to fix it, troubleshoot the most common Covenant issues.

Will a VPN slow down my speeds on Kodi?

Yes, all VPNs slightly affect your base speed. But with a premium VPN, you won’t see the difference. Choose the best VPNs for Kodi to protect your data while watching shows on Covenant. This way, you won't notice any buffering or reduced video quality.

Is Covenant on Kodi Safe and legal to use?

No, Covenant is not entirely safe or legal. It often provides pirated content and comes from third-party sources, which may pose risks like malware or legal consequences. It’s a better idea to use the alternatives to Covenant to continue safely streaming without infringing on copyrights.

Conclusion

Installing the Covenant addon on Kodi can be challenging, as it’s no longer officially supported. With the original repository shut down and the addon outdated, finding a working version is nearly impossible.

If you still try, use a VPN, stick to trusted sources, and enable antivirus protection to stay safe. Covenant features pirated content and lacks updates, making it risky and unreliable. Officially supported Kodi addons are a better option for a secure streaming experience.
