5 Best Oculus Quest VPNs in 2024: Easy to Install and Use

Sheharyar Zaheer Updated on 2nd July 2024 Fact-checked by Christine Johansen Cybersecurity Researcher

Like any other software-based technology, Oculus Quest (or Meta Quest) is susceptible to online threats, such as DDoS attacks and hacking attempts. Very few VPNs have the security and privacy features required to keep your Quest secure. In addition, the VR headset doesn’t natively support VPNs, so finding a compatible VPN can take time.

To save you the trouble, my team and I thoroughly tested 50+ VPNs to find the best one for Oculus Quest. In addition to their security and privacy features, we tested their compatibility with Quest, ease of installation, speed, and reliability.

Among all the VPNs we tested, ExpressVPN is my top pick for Oculus Quest 2. It safeguards your online data with strong encryption and a no-logs policy, and it offers custom firmware and a native app for routers. It has very fast speeds and minimal lag and offers an extensive server network. You can also try ExpressVPN with Meta Quest 2 risk-free since it has a 30-day money-back guarantee. Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at vpnMentor, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as ExpressVPN. However, this does not affect our review process.

Best VPNs for Oculus Quest — Full Analysis (Updated 2024)

1. ExpressVPN — Overall Best Oculus VPN With Fast Speeds and Minimal Lag

Best Feature Very fast speeds for a seamless VR experience on Oculus Quest 2
Server Network 3,000 servers in 105 countries provide plenty of connections for optimal performance
Simultaneous Device Connections Protect up to 8 devices with just one subscription; you can bypass this limit if you install it on a router
Works With Steam, Twitch, YouTube VR, Prime Video VR, Disney Movies VR, Netflix, and National Geographic Explorer
Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at vpnMentor, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as ExpressVPN. However, this does not affect our review process.

ExpressVPN's consistently fast speeds outshine its competition, making it one of the best options for Oculus Quest. This is due to Lightway, a proprietary protocol optimized to deliver fast yet stable speeds without putting too much load on the batteries of portable devices like VR headsets. During my tests, the speeds only dropped by 8% on average while connected to its UK servers. The minimal speed loss wasn’t even noticeable while gaming.

Image showing a first-person shooter game being played with ExpressVPNI never got a ping greater than 22ms on all its UK servers that I tested

In addition, ExpressVPN offers native support for almost all popular routers, allowing you to use it on all connected devices, including Oculus. I was able to install ExpressVPN on my Netgear router and connect to a server within 7 minutes. It also has its own router called Aircove, which comes with built-in VPN protection. Plus, there’s a travel-size of this router, Aircove Go, which comes in really handy for gamers.

It safeguards your online security with features like military-grade (AES 256-bit) encryption, a kill switch (Network Lock), and automatic obfuscation. If the VPN connection drops unexpectedly, the kill switch blocks all internet traffic to keep your data safe. It also adheres to a strict no-logs policy, meaning that it does not record any of your online activity.

The only drawback of this VPN is its price, which tends to be a bit expensive. However, it does offer regular discounts throughout the year, and I was able to get 82% off on its long-term subscription plan. In addition, you can also test all its features completely risk-free since it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Useful Features

  • Smart Location. This feature connects you to the optimal server for a seamless, lag-free experience. It takes into account your geographical location, server congestion, and speed to find a server that ensures your VR games on the Oculus Quest 2 run smoothly.
  • Private DNS. ExpressVPN operates its own DNS servers. This prevents third parties from viewing your online activity or stealing your information while you’re using the Oculus Quest 2.
  • TrustedServer Technology. ExpressVPN uses diskless servers that wipe all data whenever the servers reboot. This minimizes the risk of data breaches and maximizes your privacy.
  • Advanced Protection. This security suite consists of a Threat Manager to block malware/harmful trackers and an Ad blocker. It also allows you to set up parental controls to block adult content if you have children inside the house.
ExpressVPN Offer November 2024: For a limited time only, you can get an ExpressVPN subscription for up to 82% off! Don't miss out!

2. CyberGhost — Optimized Servers for Smooth Gaming and Streaming on Oculus Quest

Best Feature Specialized servers give you a fast and secure VR gaming and streaming experience
Server Network 11,690 servers in 100 countries including multiple optimized servers
Simultaneous Device Connections Connect up to 7 devices at the same time
Works With Steam, Twitch, YouTube VR, Prime Video VR, Disney Movies VR, Netflix, and National Geographic Explorer
Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at vpnMentor, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as CyberGhost VPN. However, this does not affect our review process.

CyberGhost has specialty servers optimized for high-bandwidth activities like gaming and streaming, which are great for Oculus Quest 2. These servers are frequently updated to provide a better streaming and gaming experience than regular ones. For example, it offers special servers that can access different Netflix libraries, Disney+, and more from anywhere. The gaming servers are located in a few countries, including the UK.

Image showing the main app interface of CyberGhostAll types of speciality servers are neatly arranged in the main app interface

Our speed tester in the US reported fast speeds with an average drop of 12% on local servers. I also got similar results in the UK for nearby servers, but the speed drop was greater for long-distance servers. In addition, CyberGhost displays the ping of every gaming-optimized server next to it in the app interface, allowing you to choose the one with the least lag.

It also keeps your VR gaming sessions secure with DDoS protection and other necessary security and privacy features like military-grade encryption, a kill switch, and a no-logs policy. Like ExpressVPN, CyberGhost also supports a wide range of home routers, but it doesn’t offer router firmware and apps, so the installation and configuration process usually takes a bit longer.

A minor con is that the VPN's expensive 1-month plan only offers a 14-day money-back guarantee. That said, you can save a lot on long-term plans starting at $2.03/month, which also include an extended money-back guarantee of 45 days.

Useful Features

  • Smart Rules. This feature lets you customize how CyberGhost behaves on your Quest 2 based on factors like network type, WiFi connection, or app usage. For example, I set CyberGhost to automatically connect to a nearby UK server whenever I open the app.
  • Content Blocker. This feature enhances your experience on the Oculus Quest 2 by blocking unwanted ads, trackers, and malicious websites. Filtering out intrusive content improves loading times and keeps you safe online.
  • WiFi Protection. This feature is also technically a part of Smart Rules and allows CyberGhost to automatically connect to the VPN whenever your Oculus Quest uses an unsecured network.
November 2024 Deal: CyberGhost is currently offering 84% off its most popular plan! Take advantage of this offer now and save more on your CyberGhost subscription.

3. Private Internet Access — Large Server Network to Provide a Seamless VR Experience

Best Feature An extensive server network to avoid server congestion and Oculus latency
Server Network 29,650 servers in 91 countries ensure plenty of speedy connections
Simultaneous Device Connections Unlimited, so you can protect all your devices without having to log out and make space for a new one
Works With Steam, Twitch, YouTube VR, Prime Video VR, Disney Movies VR, Netflix, and National Geographic Explorer
Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at vpnMentor, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as Private Internet Access. However, this does not affect our review process.

Private Internet Access (PIA) has the biggest number of servers of all VPNs I tested for Oculus Quest 2. This means that you will always find a connection nearby for a better VR experience both in terms of speed and connection stability. I always found a low-ping server during my tests and used it to play Star Trek: Bridge Crew on my Quest 2.

Image showing the streaming optimized servers on Private Internet Access App interface.Just type "streaming" in the search bar and these will pop up

It allows you to tweak connection settings based on your preferences and gaming requirements. For example, you can choose the OpenVPN protocol with AES 128-bit for solid online protection but slightly faster speeds due to fewer layers of encryption when gaming on your Oculus Quest 2.

The only issue I have with PIA is that its headquarters are in the US, which is part of the 5 Eyes Alliance. However, PIA’s no-logs policy has been audited and verified, meaning that your Oculus activity is safe. It further keeps your online data safe with its MACE feature, which blocks annoying pop-up ads, malware, and trackers.

It’s super affordable with discounts up to 83%. Plus, you can test PIA for free with its 30-day money-back guarantee.

Useful Features

  • Multi-protocol support. PIA offers IPSec (on iOS), OpenVPN, and WireGuard. I prefer WireGuard since it has the best streaming and gaming speeds. You can customize the connection settings of OpenVPN to get better speeds as well, though.
  • Multi-hop and Obfuscation. PIA gives you ultimate stealth while you game by offering this feature, which routes your traffic through both a VPN servers and your choice of a SOCKS5 or Shadowsocks proxy.
  • Advanced kill switch. Unlike a traditional kill switch, PIA’s advanced kill switch blocks your internet connection completely until you connect to the VPN first.
November 2024 Update: PIA doesn't usually have deals or discounts (it's already so affordable), but right now you can get a new subscription for a crazy 83% off!

4. NordVPN — Advanced Security Features to Keep Your Oculus Data Protected

Best Feature Threat Protection, Double VPN, and other features to keep your online data secure
Server Network 6,700 servers in 111 to avoid overcrowding so you can enjoy lower latency
Simultaneous Device Connections You can connect 10 devices simultaneously
Works With Steam, Twitch, YouTube VR, Prime Video VR, Disney Movies VR, Netflix, and National Geographic Explorer

NordVPN’s cutting-edge security features provide maximum safety as you game on your Oculus Quest 2. Its military-grade encryption protects your traffic from hacking and DDoS attempts. At the same time, the Threat Protection feature blocks malware, phishing attempts, and online trackers. I tested NordVPN for IPv6, DNS, and WebRTC leaks and detected none.

In addition, it has dedicated Obfuscated and Double VPN servers for increased security. Obfuscated servers hide the fact that you’re using a VPN. Double VPN means that your traffic goes through 2 servers instead of 1, doubling encryption and security.

Image showing the Threat Protection menu on the NordVPN App interface.Keep it turned on when sharing your PC network with your Oculus Quest

You can use its Meshnet feature to create secure private networks for gaming with friends on your Meta Quest 2. This feature allows you to play VR games over LAN, even if your friends are on another continent. Meshnet connections provide fast speeds, excellent security, and low latency, making it perfect for multiplayer gaming.

It can be annoying that NordVPN sometimes takes a while to establish a VPN connection. That said, this is just a minor inconvenience, as it provides fast and stable connections once established.

Subscriptions start at $2.99/month and are backed by its 30-day money-back guarantee.

Useful Features

  • NordLynx protocol. NordVPN’s self-developed protocol is based on WireGuard protocol and is designed to give you excellent speeds and robust security for gaming.
  • Dark Web Monitor. This feature helps to keep your online data, including Oculus accounts, secure by continuously scanning the dark web. It sends you an alert whenever it finds any leaked credentials.

5. Surfshark — User-Friendly Apps Make it Easy to Use With Your Quest 2

Best Feature A very simple app interface that’s ideal for VPN beginners
Server Network 3,200 servers in 100 countries for a smooth VR experience
Simultaneous Device Connections Unlimited, giving you great value for money
Works With Steam, Twitch, YouTube VR, Prime Video VR, Disney Movies VR, Netflix, and National Geographic Explorer

Surfshark’s intuitive interface makes it straightforward to use, even if you're new to VPNs. Its Fastest location feature automatically connects you to a nearby server with the best streaming and gaming speeds. I played No Man's Sky on my VR headset during my tests, and I didn’t encounter any lag or other connection issues.

Image showing speed results from SurfsharkMy speeds never dropped by more than 16%, even on long-distance servers

Surfshark upholds a strict no-logs policy, so it doesn't keep any of your browsing or gaming data. It also operates RAM-only servers, which automatically wipe data whenever rebooted to ensure that none of your information is ever stored. In addition, it has a Camouflage mode (obfuscation) that helps bypass network firewalls at schools or offices.

You can test Surfshark out on your Oculus Quest risk-free, thanks to its 30-day money-back guarantee. Plus, its site has money-saving offers of up to 87% off.

Useful Features

  • Rotating IP. It automatically rotates your IP address after fixed intervals without disconnecting your internet or changing your chosen location.
  • CleanWeb. Surfshark's CleanWeb improves your VR experience by protecting your Oculus Quest from online trackers, annoying ads, and malicious websites.

Tips on Choosing the Best VPN for Oculus Quest

Several crucial aspects need to be taken into account while selecting a VPN for Oculus Quest to ensure a seamless and secure VR experience. You are welcome to utilize my checklist below to assess the most suitable VPNs for your Meta Quest 2.

  • Device compatibility. Since Oculus Quest doesn’t support native VPN apps, make sure you can install your VPN on a router or a WiFi device with network-sharing capabilities. Additionally, ensure the VPN has a downloadable APK file on its website, which lets you install it on SideQuest.
  • Fast speeds. Choosing a VPN with fast speeds prevents annoying lags or buffering, ensuring your gaming and streaming remain as immersive as they should be. If the VPN slows you down a lot, you won’t be able to play or stream.
  • Global server network. A VPN with an expansive server network ensures access to a global library of VR games and content from anywhere. It also ensures you can always find a well-performing server in a region of your choice.
  • Robust security and privacy features. To stay safe using your Oculus device, look for a VPN with AES 256-bit encryption, a kill switch, a no-logs policy, and DNS/IP/WebRTC leak protection.
  • Excellent customer support. Even with the best VPN, you may encounter issues or have questions, so choosing a VPN with knowledgeable and responsive customer support is important. All the VPNs I recommend have reliable 24/7 support.
  • A trustworthy money-back guarantee. VPNs should offer you the confidence to try their service without risk. I verified each VPN's money-back guarantee policy and confirmed that they issue full refunds.

Benefits of Using a VPN for Oculus Quest

Even with all the latest updates, Oculus Quest is still vulnerable to cyber threats like DDoS attacks. A VPN protects your VR experience with numerous security and privacy features like encryption, a kill switch, and a no-logs policy. It also masks your actual IP address which hides your online activity from prying eyes and keeps your online data secure.

In addition, a VPN can help improve your speeds and reduce lag if your network provider has deliberately throttled your connection. This allows you to enjoy smooth gameplay and bufferless streaming on your Oculus Quest 2.

Quick Guide: How to Install a VPN on Oculus Quest in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Install a VPN. Oculus Quest doesn’t support VPNs natively, so you need to install a VPN on your router or sideload it using its APK file. I recommend ExpressVPN for its router support, fast speeds, and easy-to-use apps.
  2. Sideload the VPN on the Oculus Quest. To do this, install the VPN’s APK file on your Quest using the SideQuest app. Alternatively, share your VPN connection from your PC or install it on a router.
  3. Start playing VR games. Connect to a VPN server to secure your connection and enjoy your Oculus.

Detailed Guide: How to Install and Use a VPN on Oculus Quest 2

Since you can’t install a VPN app on an Oculus Quest headset, you’ll have to choose 1 of 3 ways to connect your headset to a VPN. These include using Sideload Oculus Quest, Network Sharing, or a home router.

Sideload the VPN APK File

Follow the steps below to sideload a VPN on your Oculus Quest using the SideQuest app:

  • Register as an Oculus Quest developer. Sign in to your Oculus Quest account and submit a developer request. It’s free to do.
  • Download the Oculus app. Installing the app on your phone or PC makes accessing the settings on your Oculus Quest easier.
  • Enable Developer Mode. Open the Oculus app and connect to your VR headset, then go to settings and change the toggle on Developer Mode.
  • Install SideQuest on your device. Go to the SideQuest website, download the latest version on your computer, and follow the installation instructions.
  • Enable a USB Connection. Connect your Oculus Quest to your computer with a USB cable, load SideQuest, and select Connect Device. Then, turn on your Oculus Quest, go to your settings, and allow USB debugging.
  • Install your VPN on SideQuest. Go to your VPN’s website and download its APK file. Next, open SideQuest, choose Repos, and drag and drop the APK file into the Repos window.
  • Connect to your VPN. Go to your Oculus home screen, select Library, and choose Unknown Sources. Then, open your VPN’s APK and connect to the server.

Share a Network Through a PC

This method involves hosting a VPN connection on your computer and connecting your Oculus Quest to it.

  • Bring up the Command Prompt. Open the search bar on your Windows laptop and type “cmd” to open the command prompt. Then, right-click and select Run as administrator.
  • Create your virtual router. Type the following: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=NETWORKNAME key=PASSWORD. Then, name your network by setting the SSID and key values, which are your network name and password. When that’s done, type netsh wlan start hostednetwork in the command prompt and hit Enter. If all is successful, you will see a message that says, "The host network has started."
  • Share your network. Open your VPN on your PC and connect to a server. Right-click on the Windows Start icon, select Network Connections, choose Change Adaptor Options, and right-click your VPN.
  • Open Properties. Pick the Sharing tab, and click the checkbox next to Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection. Finally, choose the connection you’ve created under Home Network Connection.
  • Connect your Oculus Quest. Turn on your Oculus headset and go to your WiFi settings. Choose your network and enter the password to connect.

Use a Router

Before installing a VPN on your home router, ensure it’s VPN compatible, as some routers aren’t. Since the installation process for each router and VPN differs, this guide is generalized. For more specific instructions, look at our step-by-step VPN router installation guide.

  • Sign in to your router. Simply enter your router’s IP address in your browser and enter your login details, such as username and password.
  • Install your VPN. Check if your router has VPN functionality or if it needs manual configuration. I recommend ExpressVPN as it’s easy to configure on most routers with custom firmware and a native app.
  • Connect to your router. Turn on your Oculus Quest and connect to your home router as usual.
Pro Tip: If you want a plug-and-play solution, I recommend purchasing a pre-configured VPN router. For example, ExpressVPN offers Aircove, plus Aircove Go, which is a travel-size VPN router that you can take anywhere you go.

FAQs on the Best VPNs for Oculus Quest

Are VPNs compatible with Oculus Quest 2?

While there are no native VPN apps for Oculus Quest 2, you can still connect it to a VPN. One way to do this is to sideload the VPN on your Oculus Quest 2 using the SideQuest app. Alternatively, you can connect your Quest to a VPN by installing the VPN on your router or sharing your VPN connection from your PC.

All these methods encrypt the traffic from your Oculus Quest so that you can securely stream or game on your VR headset from anywhere.

Is using a VPN with Oculus Quest safe and legal?

Yes, using a VPN with Oculus Quest is safe and legal in most countries. In fact, a VPN’s primary purpose is to protect your privacy while gaming on your Oculus Quest. You still need to consult your local laws to check if VPN usage is restricted or prohibited, like in China or Russia.

In addition, even in countries where VPNs are permitted, using a VPN for activities like copyright infringement is still illegal. The team and I at vpnMentor strongly condone using a VPN for illegal purposes. To avoid breaking any rules, carefully review Meta’s terms and conditions and the laws of your country.

Can I use a free VPN for Oculus Quest?

Possibly, but highly unlikely — and it’s not something I’d recommend. For safety and reliability purposes, you’re better off getting a reputable VPN with a money-back guarantee. Free services almost always come with data and speed limitations, making it nearly impossible for HD streaming, let alone high-speed gaming. In addition, they usually offer a few servers, which become overcrowded most of the time.

Other than this, free VPNs rarely have the resources to upgrade their security infrastructure to keep your data safe. Most of them don’t even follow a no-logs policy and may compromise your data by selling it to third-party trackers. On the other hand, paid VPNs have the resources to offer high-level encryption and unlimited data.

Does a VPN affect the quality of content on Oculus Quest?

In most cases, no. Good VPNs usually impact your speeds by 10 to 20%, which is not even noticeable if you have a good base connection. That said, there are some circumstances when a VPN can positively affect the quality of your content on Oculus Quest. For example, VPNs hide your activity from your ISP, which can prevent them from throttling speeds when you participate in data-heavy activities.

Is the Oculus Quest 2 region-locked?

The Oculus Quest 2 itself is not region-locked, but some content, apps, or features might be restricted based on your location. This happens due to regional laws or licensing agreements. VPNs can help with this since they offer servers in multiple countries worldwide. This means they can access content from anywhere.

However, that may be against Meta’s terms and conditions and may constitute a copyright infringement, which we highly oppose.

Why is my VPN not working with Oculus Quest?

It may not be compatible with Oculus Quest. First, make sure you’re using a VPN that’s been proven to work with it. My team and I tested all of the VPNs in this list to ensure they work with Oculus Quest without issues. If that’s not the problem, you can try these troubleshooting tips.

  • Try a different server. Sometimes, a VPN server gets overcrowded, resulting in poor performance. To solve this issue, try connecting to a new one.
  • Update or reinstall the VPN. You may also face issues if your VPN app is not updated. Try updating it, or alternatively, uninstall and reinstall your VPN to help solve your issue.
  • Install new TAP drivers. Trying to set up multiple VPNs on the same router can corrupt the TAP drivers. You can try installing a fresh batch to solve the issue.
  • Contact support. Your VPN’s support can help troubleshoot your issue, so you can contact them if your VPN is not working.

What’s the difference between Meta Quest 2 and Oculus Quest 2?

The Oculus Quest 2 and the Meta Quest 2 are the same product. They share the same features and specifications. The only difference between them is the name and logo on the device. This means VPNs that work on the Oculus Quest 2 will work equally well on the Meta Quest 2.

Get the Best VPN for Oculus Quest

Oculus Quest doesn’t support native VPN apps, but connecting your Quest device to a VPN is still possible. Not just any VPN will do, though. The best options for Oculus Quest provide a fast, reliable server network, plus strong security to keep your gaming sessions safe.

My favorite VPN for Oculus Quest is ExpressVPN. Its fast speeds, easy-to-use router app, and advanced security features provide safe and reliable online gaming and streaming from anywhere. In addition, you can try ExpressVPN with Oculus Quest completely risk-free since it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
